How a Simple “30 Second Cherry Routine” Helped Me With My Sleep

Published by Shannon V.

For three years, 3:07 AM was as familiar to me as my own name.

I didn’t need an alarm to know the time. My body just… knew.

Almost every night, my eyes would snap open in the dark, and that was it.

My rest was completely interrupted.

I’d lie there for an hour, two hours, before I’d finally drift off again just in time for my actual alarm to go off.

I was exhausted in a way I didn’t even have words for.

People told me it was just a normal part of getting older.

But my gut was telling me that waking up often in the middle of the night like this was anything but normal.

I had tried so many things.

Blackout curtains.

No screens after 8.

Chamomile tea, magnesium, white noise machines.

I even bought a $400 weighted blanket.

Nothing worked.

It was my neighbor Diane who changed things.

Diane is seventy-one years old and somehow looks sixty.

She was standing in my driveway one morning, cheerful and bright-eyed in a way that felt almost unfair to me in my state.

I made a comment about her looking so refreshed.

“Oh, my evenings are so much more peaceful now,” she replied.

Then she tilted her head. “You know, I used to have a terrible time sleeping at night too.”

She told me about a habit she’d stumbled across, a simple little thing she did for about 30 seconds before bed, involving cherries.

She was almost embarrassed describing it, saying it sounded too small to matter.

But she’d been incorporating it into her evening routine for a few months and felt it had completely transformed how she unwound at night.

I’ll be honest, when I first heard this, I nearly rolled my eyes.

Cherries? 30 seconds?

But that night, standing in my kitchen at 10:45 PM in my robe, I figured I had absolutely nothing to lose.

So I went ahead and tried the 30 second cherry routine.

The next morning?

I woke up feeling genuinely rested.

It was the most peaceful stretch of relaxation I had experienced in a very long time.

I thought it was a fluke.

But the next morning, I felt that same sense of calm. And the morning after that, I felt it too.

My husband noticed before I said a word to him.

“You seem different,” he told me over coffee one morning, “You seem… here.”

I cried a little, right there at the kitchen table. Because he was right. I was here.

All the way here, for the first time in years.

I’m not going to pretend I fully understood why it worked, I certainly didn’t at first.

But when I went looking for answers, I found a short presentation that explained the idea.

It discussed why our evenings can get so disrupted as we age, and exactly how this small, 30 second cherry routine supports a calmer night.

It made so much sense that I actually watched it twice.

If you’ve ever felt frustrated with your own nighttime routine, or if you know exactly what those restless late night hours feel like, I really think you should watch this video too.
